According to ABCNEWS.com, Enterprise has joined four other rental car companies in pledging not to rent cars that have recalls on them. The practice that was put into place was that the company would receive recalls from the car manufactures that could be something as simple as an air leak up to something like a faulty engine. Recently a PT Cruiser was rented to a family with a power steering leak and the result was an engine fire. Enterprise offered a settlement of $3 million and if accepted they would not be able to talk about the case at all. The family refused and was awarded $15 million.
I have personally worked for the company of Enterprise and have seen this happen first hand. I had to pick up customers and take them back home. One of my jobs were to also keep the cars clean and notify my boss when the cars needed maintenance. Many times we would have cars with engine lights on or faulty transmissions and if the customer wants the car or we don't have any other option we did rent them the car. That was the main issue, DON'T lose the sale! This policy is very selfish and puts innocent, unknowing customers at risk. Have we really reached a point where Fortune 5000 companies are risking lives for a few extra bucks? We really need to reform the moral structure of our economy and get back to the days where quality products were issued with a personal guarantee. This story is very upsetting and just goes to show what people do for money these days.
